The eggs of the Ostrich, Emu and Rhea.
OSTRICHThe Ostrich, native to Africa and southwest Asia, is the world's largest flightless bird. An Ostrich can weigh up to 300 pounds or more. They lay the largest of the eggs measuring on average between 15 and 16 inches in circumference. They are the thickest of the eggs which makes sculpting possible. The eggs are cream in color and have the look and feel of porcelain. |
EMUThe Emu, native to Australia is the second largest of the flightless birds. The Emu can weigh up to 100 pounds. Their eggs contain 3 layers of color. The outer layer is dark green, the center layer is turquoise and the innermost layer is white. The designs are carved into the eggs utilizing all three layers of color to create a dramatic effect. Emu eggs are 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches tall. |
RHEAThe Rhea, a native of South America, is the largest flightless bird in the Western Hemisphere. Rhea's can weigh up to 75 pounds. Rhea eggs are 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches tall. These eggs can be sculpted or have designs carved into them. Like the eggs of their cousin the Ostrich, Rhea eggs are cream in color. |
